A network firewall protects computers networks from unauthorized access. It can be a software program or a hardware device.

Network firewalls protect an internal computer network from malicious access from outside. They can be used to block open ports, malware-infested sites, and vulnerable open networks. You can find network firewalls in homes, schools, businesses, intranets, and at home. You can also set up a firewall to restrict access to external connections for internal users, such as parental controls or workplace locks.

They operate by running a process on the firewall that mirrors the service on the end host. This consolidates all data transfer to the firewall for scanning.
  • Stateful inspection
  • This is a modern way to scan firewalls that don’t require the intensive memory-intensive analysis of all packets. For the duration of the session, a stateful firewall’ stores the vital attributes of each connection in an information database. These attributes are collectively known as the state’ of a connection. They can include information such as the IP addresses and ports used in connection and the sequence numbers for packets transferred. The firewall compares the data being transmitted to the copy in the database. If the comparison results in a positive match, then the information is permitted. Otherwise, it is denied.
  • Packet filtering:

This is the simplest form of firewall software. It uses predetermined security rules to create filters. If an incoming packet is flagged by the filters it will be blocked. The requesting system is notified if packets pass the filters successfully. Otherwise, they are rejected.
