How to transfer a domain to bluehost? – Keeping your domain registration and hosting services in the same account allows you to manage both services with a single login password, making it easier to keep track of everything related to your website. This guide will walk you through the process of transferring your domain to Bluehost so you don’t get caught off guard.

Prepare Your Domain

You must change your domain settings with the current registrar in advance of the transfer. If you require assistance, please contact them.

Examine your contact details

As mandated by ICANN, your contact information is included on your domain’s WHOIS database record. The gaining registrar will utilise the information on the domain’s record to email essential information about the transfer to the administrative contact when the domain is transferred, so be sure it’s correct. It’s advised to avoid using the domain’s email address and instead use a public email provider like Gmail.

When changing the registrant contact information (name, organisation, or email address) for a generic top-level domain (gTLD), a Change of Registrant process is triggered, which necessitates extra verification before the new information is saved. This process is handled differently by each registrar, so check with yours to see what you need to do.

Privacy is disabled.

The following step is to turn off domain privacy. Your contact information is protected from being made public in the WHOIS database by using privacy. Even so, the gaining registrar must that information in order to know where to send the authorization codes. The registrar can examine the contact information on your domain’s WHOIS record and send domain transfer emails to the administrator after Privacy is disabled; otherwise, such emails will go to a Privacy Protection inbox that cannot be viewed.

Your Name Servers Should Be Updated

Your domain’s traffic is directed to the host server by name servers. If you’ve already transferred your website to Bluehost, you should update your nameservers immediately to avoid any downtime during the transfer; otherwise, you’ll have to wait till it’s finished. You won’t be able to make DNS adjustments while the transfer is in progress, so do it now.

  1. ns1.Bluehost.com is a domain that belongs to Bluehost.
  2. ns2.Bluehost.com is a domain that belongs to Bluehost.

As soon as you save your changes, your new DNS settings will begin to spread. Each ISP updates at a different rate, with most changes taking between 24 and 72 hours to finish globally. Your emails will be unavailable during this time, and web traffic will be routed to either the old or new server, depending on the visitor’s ISP.

Activate the Domain

The next step is to unlock your domain and make it transferable. Some registrars will unlock your domain for you manually, while others will do so for you.

Get the EPP Code.

Finally, the EPP code, commonly known as the Authorization or Auth code, is required. It’s effectively a domain-specific password made up of letters, numbers, and special characters that must be entered to enable the transfer.

Begin the Transfer

  1. Go to your Bluehost control panel and log in.
  2. From the left-hand side navigation menu, select the Domains tab.

  3. From the submenu that displays, select Transfer.
  4. Click the Continue button after entering the domain name you want to transfer (without the www).
  5. Click the Continue button after entering the EPP Code.
  6. The Admin Verification code will be provided to the admin email address for the domain that is being transferred as part of our two-step verification process.
  7. When you’re ready, enter the verification code and then click the Continue button.
  8. Update your nameservers, select your renewal option, and decide whether or not to add Domain Privacy.
  9. To agree to the Terms of Service, check the box, then click the Add to Cart button.
  10. To begin the transfer, process the payment.

Legacy

  1. Go to your Bluehost control panel and log in.
  2. To transfer a domain, go to the domains tab at the top of the page and select transfer from the submenu.
  3. Alternatively, you can select Transfer from the Action Items column.
    Click the Continue button after entering the domain you want to transfer to your account (without the www).
  4. Click Continue after entering the EPP code.
  5. The Admin Verification Code will be issued to the domain administrator as part of our two-step verification process. Click Continue after entering the code.
  6. You can update your nameservers, select your renewal options, and decide whether or not to add domain privacy here.
  7. Finally, agree to the Terms of Service by checking the box, then click Add to Cart.
  8. The gaining registrar is required by ICANN to renew the domain for one year after transfer, as seen in the Shopping Cart. To begin the transfer, process the payment.

Examine Your Progress

A domain transfer can take up to five days to complete, although some registrars may allow you to speed things up by personally approving the transfer. Meanwhile, you can monitor its development by performing the following steps:

  1. Go to the Bluehost Domain Manager and log in.
  2. In the submenu at the top of the page, select Transfer.
  3. Under Details, you can see how far the transfer has progressed and click the link for further details.

How do I Transfer my Domain Name?

It’s crucial to double-check a few things before you start the domain transfer process:

  1. Is it possible to transfer your domain?
  2. Is your domain about to expire and you need to renew it?
  3. Have you recently renewed your domain?

Although each registrant is different, you should be able to follow these general guidelines:

  1. Log in to your existing registrar’s domain management tools.
  2. Update your contact information (especially your e-mail address) so Bluehost can contact you with vital information during and after the transfer.
  3. For the transfer process, make sure privacy options are turned off. Don’t worry; once your domain has been successfully transferred to Bluehost, you can re-enable them.
  4. Nameservers should be updated to point to Bluehost. NS1.BLUEHOST.COM and NS2.BLUEHOST.COM are the addresses to use. (This means your website is hosted with Bluehost.com.) The propagation of a DNS change might take anywhere from a few hours to many days. You’ll be able to continue the transfer process after it’s finished.)
    Check to see if your domain name is locked.
  5. Obtain your “transfer EPP code,” often known as an authorisation code. This should be made available to you. To begin the transfer, copy this code and login to your new registrant (Bluehost).
  6. All that’s left is to initiate the transfer from the new registrar once you’ve readied your domain for transfer (Bluehost).

In your Bluehost control panel, go to the Domain Manager tab.

  1. From the Shortcuts menu on the top left-hand side, select “Transfer a new domain to your account.”
  2. Click proceed after entering the domain you want to transfer.
  3. Continue by entering the EPP code you obtained from your previous registrar.

Bluehost will send a second verification code to the domain’s administrator e-mail address. (That’s why it’s critical to change your contact information before beginning the transfer.) Continue by entering this verification code.

That’s all there is to it! There is a lot of effort that goes on behind the scenes to make the transfer happen. It usually takes between 5 and 10 days to finish.

This is due in part to the fact that both Bluehost and GoDaddy are continually changing things and moving things around, so their respective websites will seem different in 2020 than they did a few years ago.

My goal is to show you how to move your hosting from Godaddy to Bluehost without any hassles. I’ll also show you how to transfer your domain from Godaddy to Bluehost, but that’s completely optional.

I understand how critical it is for you to complete this as quickly as possible and without experiencing any difficulties. That’s why I created this visual guide to make it easier for you to follow the stages.

In this guide, I’ll show you how to manually switch hosting providers (without the help of a plugin). Despite the fact that I am not at all tech-savvy, it took me less than an hour to transfer my blog from GoDaddy to Bluehost, and I didn’t even have this instructions to help me!

Step 1: Get hosted with Bluehost

First and foremost, you must register with Bluehost for a web hosting account. Step 2: Download your WordPress files

  1. Go to your GoDaddy account and log in.
  2. Click Manage after expanding the Web Hosting tab.
  3. You will be redirected to your cPanel. Locate the File manager icon in the Files area and click it.
  4. A new window will appear. Look for the public html folder in the left-hand panel.
  5. When you click on it, the contents will appear on the right-hand panel. This folder contains all of your WordPress files. Click Compress after selecting all of the files.
  6. Select Zip Archive, then Compress Files.
  7. Make a mental note of where the Archive is located. The target location should always be the same public html folder.
  8. When the compression is finished, locate the freshly produced zip file and select Download from the top menu to save your WordPress files to your computer.

Step 3: Export your GoDaddy database

  1. Return to your cPanel and select Databases from the drop-down menu. Select phpMyAdmin from the drop-down menu.
  2. Your databases can be found on the left-hand side. Select the database for your blog. The database will expand to the right, revealing various tables such as comments, posts, and so on.
  3. Select Export from the top menu.
  4. Select Quick and Format >> SQL as the export method. Press the Start button. Your computer will be saved with the database.

Step 4: Change domain nameservers

  1. Return to your GoDaddy account (by clicking My Products at the top of the page) and expand the Domains tab this time.
  2. Select Manage DNS.
  3. A new window will appear. Scroll down till you see Nameservers written on the page.
    Select Change from the drop-down menu.
  4. Substitute the Bluehost nameservers you received through email when you signed up for Bluehost hosting for the GoDaddy nameservers. NS1.BLUEHOST.COM and NS2.BLUEHOST.COM are the most common Bluehost nameservers.
  5. Make a backup of your modifications. Your domain will now be sent to Bluehost.
  6. If you wish to move your domain to Bluehost as well, you can do it once you’ve completed step 10 and your website is up and operating on Bluehost.

Step 5: Assign your domain to your Bluehost cPanel

  1. Go to your Bluehost account and sign in.
  2. Click Domain Manager after scrolling down to the Domains section.
  3. From the top menu, select Assign.
  4. Select the second alternative.
  5. Type in your domain name, such as MyDomainName.com, if it is not already associated with your account.

  • Choose addon vs. parked and make sure Addon domain is selected in step 3 (scroll down).
  • Select Create a new directory like this: public html/MyDomainName in step 4: Pick addon directory and sub-domain.
  • Use MyDomainName (replace with your own domain name) as a subdomain and then click Assign this domain.

Step 6: Transfer WordPress files to Bluehost

  1. Go to Hosting in the top menu of your Bluehost account.
  2. Click File manager after scrolling down to the Files section.
  3. A popup window will appear, prompting you to choose the directory you want to open. Select your domain name from the drop-down box and tick Document Root for. Press the Submit button.
  4. To upload the zip file you downloaded from GoDaddy in Step 2, go to the top menu and select Upload.
  5. This is when things get a little complicated. If your zip file is larger than 150 MB, you’ll need to use FTP to upload it. Return to the hosting menu and pick FTP from the top menu in this scenario.
  6. You’ll need to register a new FTP account and instal FileZilla (a free programme) on your computer.
  7. Select the zip file and tap Extract after the upload is complete.

Step 7: Create a new database in Bluehost

  1. Return to your Bluehost dashboard and select MySQL Databases from the Database section.
  2. Make a new database, for example, database1. You’ll need the database name (with the prefix) in step 8, so click Create database and write it down. The name of your database will be prefix database1.
  3. After that, scroll down to user1 to create a new user. Create a password for yourself and write down your username, including the prefix – prefix user1 and password. Hit the target. Make a user account.
  4. Add the newly formed user to the database you’ve just made.

  2. Create a user by pressing the Create a user button.

Step 8: Move database to Bluehost

  1. Return to the Database area and pick phpMyAdmin this time.
  2. Look for the database you generated in step 7 in the left-hand panel and click on it (if you can’t see it, click the + sign to expand the folders). The panel on the right-hand side will be blank.
  3. Step 3: Import the database you downloaded from GoDaddy.

Step 9: Edit Wp-Config.php file

  1. Go to the top menu and select Hosting.
  2. Scroll down to the Files section and click File manager, just like you did before.
  3. A popup window will appear, prompting you to choose the directory you want to open.
  4. Select your domain name from the drop-down box and tick Document Root for.
  5. Press the Submit button.
  6. Open the file wp-config.php in Code editor.
  7. Replace the highlighted parts of the DB NAME, DB USER, and DB PASSWORD with the database name, username, and passport created in step 7.

Step 10: Save permalinks

  1. Log into your WordPress dashboard as usual.
  2. Go to Settings >> Permalinks
  3. Simply click Save.

That’s all there is to it! Bluehost should now have your blog up and running.

Step 11: Transfer Godaddy domain to Bluehost

Your domain is still registered with GoDaddy at this time. You can either leave it there or move it to Bluehost. It’s all up to you.

You must follow the procedures below to transfer your domain name from GoDaddy to Bluehost.

  1. Go to your GoDaddy account and log in.
  2. Navigate to Domains >> Organize
  3. Make sure Domain lock is turned off by scrolling down to the bottom of the page.
  4. Turn off Private registration if you’ve previously purchased it from GoDaddy. It’s possible that you’ll have to wait a few hours for this to take effect.
  5. Scroll down to the bottom of the page and click where it says Get a code for permission. This will be sent to the email address that GoDaddy has on file for you (it might take a few good minutes).

Once you have the authorization code, login to your Bluehost account.

  1. Log in to your Bluehost account once you receive the authorisation code.
  2. Go to Domains, scroll down to your domain list, and click the box next to your domain.
  3. Go to the Options tab and select Transfer.
  4. Then click the Transfer this domain to your account link once more.
  5. Copy the authorisation code you received from GoDaddy and paste it here.
  6. Choose whether or not you want domain privacy and whether or not you want your domain to auto-renew, then finish the transaction.

You will be charged for an additional year of domain registration. This year begins when the domain registration you’ve already paid for with GoDaddy expires (have a look at the dates). As a result, you don’t lose anything.

That’s it. It’s possible that the domain transfer will take a few days to complete, but it’s all behind the scenes.

You should have successfully transferred your blog from GoDaddy to Bluehost at this point.

If you have a custom email address and have been using GoDaddy’s webmail, you will also need to move it.

I don’t understand the point in paying GoDaddy for email when your Bluehost hosting plan already includes multiple/unlimited email accounts.

To do so, simply go to your Bluehost account’s Email page and generate the same personalised email addresses you had with GoDaddy. Then, to send and receive emails, link your personalised email addresses to Gmail, Outlook, or whichever service you’re using.
