What a “This Site May be Harmful to Your Computer”

Warning

Today’s browsers have security features designed to recognise and alert users about malicious websites to help prevent them from being unwitting victims. This built-in defense could for one of several reasons flag a site:

  • It’s a recognized misleading (or phishing) site that impersonates a real website to trick users into uploading confidential information , such as passwords, credit card numbers, account details etc.
  • It’s a known site that is trying to trick you into unwanted (and definitely unneeded) software installations.
  • It is an attack site that contains malware that, when you visit, will infect your computer.

Although the user may bypass the warning and visit the flagged website, this is highly inappropriate.

But what if your website receives a warning “This site could damage your computer?”

This must be a mistake — your website does not fit any of the descriptions above, right? Perhaps it may be. If your website has been hacked to include malware or bad links, you may have become an attack site unknowingly, and every user who tries to visit will receive a warning “This site may harm your computer,” reducing traffic to your site and damaging your reputation.

Fix your hacked website

If you haven’t already done so, register your site in Google Search Console (formerly known as Google Webmaster Tools). In any event, you should do this; it not only provides useful webmaster tools, it also verifies you as the website’s legitimate owner — and it’s free. When your site is approved, please visit the “Security Issues” section of your website for updates on any security concerns.

Once you have removed all of your site’s malicious code, content, and links, you will need to submit a request to Google to review your site to remove the warning “This site may harm your computer.”
